New Executives

Recently all club club officers received a memo from Sophie Dangerfield at RI. Your executive members for next year should be reported on the District website now. You may find this document helpful How do I carry over a current year executive?

Do this in the district site first. If your club is integrated with RI, and most are, you can check later to see that the executive does show up  there. How to manage club officers.

Do not delay because this is important in July.

DG Message - Membership – It’s always about membership!

Without strong and committed members, Rotary would not be able to provide services and support to help the vulnerable and those in need.

This is a topic I have spoken about during many of my Club visits this year, as I talk about the state of Rotary membership.  As is the case with almost all service organisations, North American membership numbers are generally in decline, and our membership is aging.  We have seen the effects of this recently in D7040, with the closing of a venerable Club whose members decided that they could no longer function as an effective Rotary Club.
The solution is to make ourselves attractive as an organisation to younger generations, and then ensure that we make these new, and indeed all, members feel welcome and valued.  Membership growth is not just about attraction, but also retention; if we don’t keep new members, we are no further ahead!

We usually use our service function as our major marketing pitch to potential new members, but for many people in early- to mid-career this is not a sufficient rationale for joining a service organisation.  We need to think about what make us attractive – and we have much to offer.  When people are already juggling numerous family and work obligations, we must talk about what sets us apart, and how we can provide a return-on-investment, the primary investment being of time, energy, enthusiasm, and ideas.

We often forget all the opportunities that members have available within Rotary, which not only set us apart from other service organisations but can provide that return-on-investment.  My favourite depiction of what Rotary has to offer is the attached image, designed by an Australian Rotaract Club.  Think about it – young people telling us how they see Rotary!  Let’s use the messages in this image of what Rotary has to offer as part of our messaging when asking - especially younger - potential members to talk to us about what Rotary has to offer.

Most Important Dates for Membership Decline

The two most important dates for membership decline are June 30 and December 31. Clubs should get their invoices out well in advance of these dates so they know which members will not be returning.

Les deux dates les plus importantes pour le déclin des effectifs sont le 30 juin et le 31 décembre. Les clubs doivent envoyer leurs factures bien avant ces dates afin de savoir quels membres ne reviendront pas.

What is Rotary

District 7040 Changeover

Designing Your Rotary Experience

Getting involved in Rotary offers opportunities to make connections, participate in meaningful service, become a leader, and expand your perspective. The personal growth that members achieve through Rotary is shaped by how they decide to participate. We know that each member has a unique combination of interests, skills, and talents, and each member is attracted to different activities.

The Designing Your Rotary Experience guide is a tool that all Rotaractors and Rotarians can use to personalize their Rotary membership and take action in ways that are important to them. The guide teaches new members more about Rotary and their options for getting involved.  And for longer-term members, the guide is a good reminder of all the possibilities that their Rotary membership holds.

Normalizing “Mental Health Hygiene”

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. In Canada or the USA, if you're in immediate danger or need urgent medical support, call 9-1-1. If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8.

For many of us, dental hygiene is a no-brainer. We brush our teeth every day knowing this simple action goes a long way to preventing serious issues in the future, like gum disease and tooth decay. In doing this, we’ve subconsciously adopted universally accepted guidelines for our dental health: Small actions, every day, that benefit our wellness. Since we already engage in a daily list of practices to maintain our physical health and dental health – extending the concept to apply to our mental health makes sense.

The term “mental health hygiene” refers to daily activities that support and maintain mental health.  It includes incorporating simple practices into your daily or weekly schedule that aim to improve our quality of life by reducing negative behaviours and promoting emotional wellness/stability. It is suggested that spending even just 10-15 minutes daily on mental health hygiene can bring a host of benefits, from improved mood and better relationships to even deeper concentration and enhanced creativity.

Happy Spring Rotarians!

En anglais seulement
It is Spring, that wondrous time of year that nature wakes up.  My east windows are full of seedlings (vegetables, herbs, and native flowers)  waiting to be transplanted in the garden.  The crocuses are blooming, and the tulips leaves promise a soon-to be wondrous display.  It makes me happy.

I love fresh air, open windows, and doors.  I love to hear the birds. Except there are fewer every year and I have no choice but to listen to an incessant suburban buzz!  Not a bee buzz, but lawnmowers.  Think about the noise and air pollution we cause when we mow, trim and blow. Emissions from (fossil-fuelled) mowers, blowers, and trimmers are an important source of toxic and carcinogenic exhaust and fine particulate matter (EPA).  Toxic pesticides and fertilizers… we cannot keep on using these, knowing how much we harm the environment (and ourselves).

Our District- wide efforts to promote urban biodiversity (Less lawns and lights) is ramping up again.

Mother's Day Tea Party

Rotary Foundation Moment

"What can you do, what are you willing to do for Rotary?  Perhaps one of the greatest opportunities of your life to do world's service lies before you now."
Paul Harris - at the 1914 Rotary International Convention in Houston, TX
This poignant quote is one I really appreciate all year, but most of all now.  This is the time of the year when clubs and Boards are looking for fresh ideas, new volunteers, and strategies for the upcoming Rotary year.  Please consider how YOU can help your club or District in the area of Foundation and International Service.  We really do WANT to hear from YOU and would love to have you join one of our teams!  Reach out today in your club or to a District representative!
