May’s theme is Youth Service. We will continue with the ABCs of Rotary that I started in July 2021 at the beginning of my term as District Governor – we are nearing the end of the alphabet and the end of another Rotary year.

The letters V & W inspire the words Vision, Volunteer, Vocation, Work and We.
Vision allows us to see that much is possible when we work together. RYLA, Youth Exchange, Interact and EarlyAct are prime examples of Rotary’s vision for youth. We encourage youth to build international understanding and make new friends, develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Service Above Self. They will have the opportunity to find out that serious leadership can be seriously fun and connects Youth with leaders in their community and around the world.

With these skills we encourage youth to own their vision, and to take action to make a difference in their school and community.
Volunteering is a selfless act of an individual or group freely giving time, compassion, and labour in community service. Many volunteers are specifically trained in the areas in which they work, such as medicine, education, or emergency rescue. Others serve using their organizational, cooking, entrepreneurial, networking, and fundraising skills, or their enthusiasm to get the “job done.”  Every volunteer makes a difference.

A vocation is an occupation to which a person is especially drawn or for which they are suited, trained, or qualified. In Rotary we consider all vocations worthy. I was a young child when I knew what I wanted to do with my life. There was no one that could stand in my way. Those that share their vocation by volunteering in their chosen field or in other fields are essential to keeping Rotary’s good work alive.

Work is an activity involving mental and/or physical effort done to achieve a purpose or result. As a Rotarian this is often a focus both when volunteering and in our vocation to arrive at the completion of a vision we set for ourselves.

We is the word that has been the most impactful in my life journey. We, as a group, are capable of anything whereas “I” am limited by the circumstances around me. Changing my mind set from “me to we” at an early age made my life richer. I was able to participate in others’ successes as they supported my own success. Rotary has furthered this learning for me, especially as we build on inclusion within our organization focusing on the young and those that are different from ourselves.

--------------------------
