What is RYLA?
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts around the world. It is entirely volunteer-run with many organizers and counselors being past RYLA delegates themselves. Participants attend RYLA with the financial support of a local Rotary club who “award” youth with a chance to participate in this once in a lifetime experience. Youth are selected based on the demonstration of leadership potential and a desire to be of service to their local and global communities. After RYLA, participants are required to present to their sponsor club based on their experience.

What do participants experience at RYLA?

At RYLA participants:
  • Develop skills as a leader while having fun and making connections.
  • Build communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Discover strategies for becoming a dynamic leader in their school or community.
  • Learn from community leaders, inspirational speakers, and peer mentors.
  • Unlock their potential to turn motivation into action.
  • Have fun and form lasting friendships!

Where does RYLA take place and how do I get there?
This year's conference will happen online using Zoom, Google Classroom and other virtual platforms and activities. The online link will be provided closer to the start date once all students are registered.

Who is eligible to apply?
District 7040 RYLA is open to high school and CEGEP students ages 15-18 living in District 7040 and District 7010.

I’m interested in attending, where do I start?

Youth who are interested in participating should fill out this form. Details for video component of application (first question of form):

The RYLA committee is taking a unique approach to applications this year. In lieu of essay submissions interested youth should submit a 2-5 minute video taken on their phone, tablet, or computer etc., answering the following questions:
  1. What is your name, grade and where are you from (city or town and school)?
  2. What do you hope to gain from RYLA?
  3. Tell us about something that scares you about being in a leadership position?
  4. What is an issue that you are particularly passionate about and why? If you’ve done something in your community to address this issue tell us about it.
  5. OPTIONAL - Will you be presenting a project in the project forum?* Tell us a little about this project and what you hope to gain from participating in the project forum.   *This year we will be having a “project forum” where participants will have the opportunity to share a leadership project that they are planning to do (or have done in the past and are looking to improve). This is an amazing opportunity to get feedback from like-minded peers, counselors, and mentors, to improve your impact as well as to recruit others to help you make your dream a reality.
These short videos are a great way to get to know you a little bit before camp and will be shown to your sponsor Rotary club, your small group participants (5-8 other youth who you will participate in activities with throughout RYLA in order to help everyone get to know their group before camp starts!) and your assigned counselors. We are not judging based on production value, although feel free to get as creative as you like. If you have any questions or concerns with the application format don’t hesitate to email us (ryla7040@gmail.com) and we will find a solution that works for you.

Our Rotary club wants to sponsor participants, where do we start?

Clubs who are interested in sponsoring one or more youth should fill out this form as soon as possible indicating the number of youth they are planning to sponsor, and whether or not they need any assistance in the process of recruiting or selecting youth. This year we can accept up to 3 youth per club. Any more than this is dependent on space, please contact the chair.

As a club, when encouraging youth to apply have them fill out the applicant form on this page and make sure they note the name of your Rotary club in their applicant form. This is how we will know to whom to forward their completed application when we receive it so that clubs can use these to select applicants. For direct pool applicants who have not yet been in touch with a sponsor club we will forward the application to the closest Rotary club.

Final selection of applicants continues to remain at the club level. However, if your club is new to the process (i.e., hasn't sponsored applicants in the past) and needs assistance or advice with how to go about selecting applicants please let us know. Of note, clubs that receive a large number of applications generally form a committee to review applications and select students for RYLA. Once your club makes the final selection of candidates please let us know the names of the students selected. We will get in contact with them based on the contact information in their original application to have permission forms completed and send out care packages for the event! We will also review their short videos to help create student groups for the event and to assist with planning of workshops that are tailored to the interests of attendees.

Registration fees this year are $75 CAD or $59 US. Cheques should be made payable to: RI District 7040 and mailed to: Ariane Carriere, District Treasurer, 228 Fifteenth St. W. Cornwall Ontario, Canada, K6J 3J8.  In Canada only, Interac e-transfers can also be sent to: RotaryD7040@gmail.com (don’t forget to let the chair know the password!) Registration fees can be submitted in advance of selecting participants in order to reserve spots.
