What is RYLA?
Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts around the world. It is entirely volunteer-run with many organizers and counselors being past RYLA delegates themselves. Participants attend RYLA with the financial support of a local Rotary club who “award” youth with a chance to participate in this once in a lifetime experience. Youth are selected based on the demonstration of leadership potential and a desire to be of service to their local and global communities. After RYLA, participants are required to present to their sponsor club based on their experience.
What do participants experience at RYLA?
At RYLA participants:
- Develop skills as a leader while having fun and making connections.
- Build communication and problem-solving skills.
- Discover strategies for becoming a dynamic leader in their school or community.
- Learn from community leaders, inspirational speakers, and peer mentors.
- Unlock their potential to turn motivation into action.
- Have fun and form lasting friendships!

Where does RYLA take place and how do I get there?
The event will be hosted at RKY Camp on beautiful Eagle Lake one hour north of Kingston.
Who is eligible to apply?
District 7040 RYLA is open to high school and CEGEP students ages 15-17 living in District 7040.
Public Health and Safety
Please know that every precaution will be undertaken to insure the health and safety of the young people in our care. We will adhere rigorously to public health protocols. In the event that we cannot host RYLA safely in person, it is our plan to pivot to online. We also request that participants experiencing COVID-19-like symptoms refrain from attending RYLA and will be offered the chance to attend the following year.
Our Rotary club wants to sponsor participants, where do we start?
Clubs who are interested in sponsoring one or more youth should complete the
Club Sponsor Form as soon as possible indicating the number of youth they are planning to sponsor, and whether or not they need any assistance in the process of recruiting or selecting youth. This year we can accept up to 3 youth per club. Any more than this is dependent on space available after the application deadline.
As a club lead, please assist the chosen student(s) in completing the registration form (below) and make sure they note the name of your Rotary club on the form. This is how we will know to whom to forward their completed form when we receive it. It is very important that you work closely with the local high school Guidance team or designated teacher. Please continue to stay in touch with students between the time the registration form is submitted and the start of the event. Has the student checked to see if there are any conflicts with RYLA dates (e.g. the Prom, assignments/tests on Friday, shifts at work)? These matters will ensure that nothing is missed.

Final selection of applicants continues to remain at the club level (not the school). However, if your club is new to the process (i.e., hasn't sponsored applicants in the past) and needs assistance or advice with how to go about selecting applicants, please let us know. Of note, clubs that receive a large number of applications generally form a committee to review applications and select students for RYLA. Once your club makes the final selection of candidates, please let us know the names of the students selected. We will then get in contact with them to make certain that the forms are accurate and complete, and provide more details about the program!
