Being an exchange student in Switzerland has been the most exciting (and humbling) experience. When I first considered applying to become an exchange student, I had many questions and concerns. First, I knew it wouldn't be guaranteed that I could go to my first country of choice, so I felt the fear and uncertainty of where I would end up. Second, I knew that I would miss out on sharing my final year of high school with the people I have grown up with. Despite this, I had faith that this experience would be worthwhile, and I submitted my application. After just being here for a little under three months, I am so glad that despite my concerns, I signed up for this program.

So far, I have met people from all over the world; some of my new friends being from Argentina, Brazil, Finland, and Ecuador just to name a few. Though I do face many challenges with the language barrier, I already feel so much more confident in my French than I did at the beginning of my exchange. The kids in my class are very patient with me, and always help me when I ask for it. My host family has also been incredible throughout the entire process and have provided me with many experiences that I know I will cherish for the rest of my life.
Shortly after my arrival in Switzerland, I attended a language camp in Fiesch where I studied the basics of French and related to the experiences of other exchange students from around the world. Together, we visited the largest glacier in Europe, as well as a large swinging bridge not far from the camp.

With my host family, I have been able to experience hiking in the alps, along with visits to well-known areas of Switzerland such as Gruyere and my place of schooling, Fribourg. Currently, I am with my host family in the south of France for the autumn holidays, where we are horseback riding and swimming in the ocean.

When I chose my list of countries, I ranked Switzerland as my last choice. Despite it not being my highest priority, I am so glad to be where I am. That is one of the most incredible aspects of this exchange program, no matter where you end up, you can always find a way to make the most out of the experience. At this point, Switzerland almost feels like my second home, so it is hard to imagine being anywhere else for my exchange year.

To anyone thinking of applying to the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, or to Rotary clubs considering sponsoring an exchange student, I highly recommend it. So far, this experience has provided me with independence, better understanding of the world, and the opportunity to learn a new language, all of which are things that can truly change a person for the better. Even though this experience has not always been easy, I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity. As my time here may progress to become more difficult, I will always try my best to remember how lucky I am to be here.
